When Jake wakes up, he's never quite awake. Maybe it's a paradox, but it's also Jake, and Jack is relying on it when he snuggles up to Jake and tests his neck with his teeth. He knows that Jake won't be capable of more than mmfrghl for several minutes and when he whispers "Jehk" in Avery's voice Jake turns and mmfrghls into his shoulder.
"Jehk," Jack whispers again, licking the spot behind Jake's ear. There's a soft noise, and if Jack isn't careful Jake will wake up soon, so instead he breathes into Jake's ear and tucks up warm against him.
Jake mumbles something that sounds like "'vrey," and traps Jack against his chest, snuggling tight. Avery? It was Avery that he said, yes it was Avery, so Jack smiles. When Jake's asleep again Jack worms out from under his arm. Avery's not due back until tomorrow, and neither of them can wait, but Jack thinks it's nice when Jake smiles without waking up. And when Jake wakes up having dreamt that he held Avery, then he's more likely to hold Jack too. Jack doesn't know it yet, but even when Avery comes back, he's still going to love waking up to Avery's lilting voice and waking up to Jake's smile.
